Student Advising Checklist
- Did I complete the New Student Checklist that came in my acceptance email if I am an new student?
- Have I received my specific approved pathway(s) to see what college courses I have to choose from?
- Have I carefully considered the high school classes I need for graduation, my short-term and long-term goals, and my plans to attend a college or university in the future?
- If not, I can do this during my advising appointment. This information will assist my advisor in selecting the most suitable courses to help me achieve my goals. The advisor can look at my goal colleges and help choose courses that are suitable.
- Do I have my JCC Student ID number memorized and easily accessible?
- Do I understand that advising is required for all first-time CCP students?
- If I am a returning student, it is highly suggested to make an advising appointment but it is not required. If my advisor reviews the courses I put in my schedule and expresses additional advising is required, I must attend an appointment with the advisor.
- Have I checked in Self-Service to see who my advisor is?
- If I need help determining the courses I need for my goals/college transfer course options, I can book time with them:
- Am I choosing courses that are three credits to count for Dual Enrollment?
- College courses that are three (3) to four (4) semester hours of credit will equal one high school course credit on the high school transcript and are required to be added to my high school transcript and calculated into my GPA.
- Note: In certain circumstances, lower semester hour credits from community college courses with the same course prefix may be combined to meet the minimum three semester credit hours required for high school credit. For example, a 2-credit MED course could be combined with another MED course to meet the 3-4 credit requirement for dual credit.
- Do I understand that it is my responsibility to consider my schedule (e.g., high school, work, sports) and high school graduation requirements, then plan my CCP classes accordingly?
- In other words, I am meeting with the high school guidance counselor each semester if I need clarification regarding requirements for high school graduation. If I want any in-person JCC classes, I am discussion any early release type of issues with my guidance counselor. In addition, I am being thoughtful about my schedule and what is best for A/B grade outcomes.
- Do I understand that for every course credit hour, I should expect to spend approximately 3 hours in and/or on the class each week?
- For example, a 3-credit hour class equates to about 9 hours each week. So, if I am enrolled in ENG-111 and MAT-171, that is approximately 20 hours of work per week.
- Do I know that if I enroll in an unauthorized class, I can be dropped even after the semester has already started?
- Unauthorized classes can include courses for which I have not satisfied the prerequisites, courses not in my pathway, or courses that are outside of my pathway's restrictions.
- Do I understand that class grades, e-texts, and online courses are accessed in Blackboard, and have I ensured that I can log in to Blackboard on the JCC website?
- Do I know it is my responsibility to review my JCC class schedule in Self-Service, and do I know how to do this?
- I should see a checkmark with the word "registered" next to my courses to know that I am fully registered.
- Will I monitor my JCC email inbox regularly, and do I know how to do this?
- If I do not know how to use email/Outlook, I should contact JOLT (Jaguar Office of Learning Technology).
- Do I know it is my responsibility to check the CCP Calendar, the JCC Academic Calendar, and each course syllabus for important dates, especially BILL REVIEW/PAY, as the college will drop students from classes for non-payment?
- The CCP and JCC dates/calendars can be found on the CCP Webpage under Important Events and Dates.
- Am I aware that the JCC Library offers free tutoring and that it is my responsibility to request this service if needed?
- This can be found on our Jaguar Tutoring webpage.
- Do I know that once my advisor locks my schedule, I will need to submit any changes for review?
- If I need another course, I have to add it in Self-Service and wait for my advisor to review. It could take up to five business days for the CCP Advisor to review.
- Do I understand that if I drop a course on or after it's start date, I will still be financially responsible for any applicable student fees?
- If I am a JCPS student, do I know that I have to monitor my CCP Google Classroom for textbook information, and if I am a non-JCPS student, that I should contact the bookstore?
- Regarding science courses:
- Do I understand that online science labs have a much higher cost that other courses?
- All fully online Natural Sciences require a lab kit, and I am responsible for covering the cost, which may be several hundred dollars.
- If cost is an issue, am I considering waiting to take the lab on campus in a blended or fully in-person class to lessen that cost?
- Am I aware that it's advisable not to take college-level sciences until I have successfully completed the high school equivalents?
- For example, taking high school chemistry before college chemistry.
- Is it my responsibility to make sure my Self-Service account balance is paid by the deadline?
- View the CCP Important Events & Dates for bill review/pay dates. If I have an outstanding account balance in Self-Service, the college may place a hold and it must be paid in full before I can be registered for future classes.
- Do I understand that instructor preference is not guaranteed?
- The college may have to move around course selections, instructors, etc., based on many factors. If an asynchronous online selection of a course I request is full, I will be placed in another asynchronous online selection of the same course if available and without notification.
- Do I understand that if I need to make changes to my course schedule, I can change some things in Self-Service, but for others, I may need to make an appointment with an advisor?
- For example, if I have been approved for ENG-112-I04, I can switch the section to ENG-112-I08 if necessary.
- However, if I have not been approved for PHI-240 and I want to add it, it will have to go to the advisor through the Self-Service process to be reviewed.
- Changes in my schedule should be rare. I should be very thoughtful before choosing courses to submit to advisors.
- Do I understand that advisors have many students to advise and that if I want to change my schedule, it may take time to get courses approved?
That means I should be incredibly thoughtful when I choose my courses for the first time.
Do I understand that I can only drop/add my approved courses before the first of day of class in Self-Service?
That means on and after the first day of class, I must use the submit a drop/add form to change my schedule up until the census date. After the census date for that course, a withdrawal form is submitted.
Do I need help learning how to schedule/plan out courses in Self-Service?
Did I choose the right section for my needs?
Capital "I" at the end means fully online. For example, ENG-112-I04 = fully online.
Do I know what to do if this is my graduation year from high school?
I have met with my high school guidance counselor about my goals.
I know that I need to send my JCC transcripts to any other college I plan on attending.
If I plan on continuing at JCC, I contacted the Student Success Center to see when it is best to apply, fill out the FAFSA and any other necessary forms.
- If not, I can do this during my advising appointment. This information will assist my advisor in selecting the most suitable courses to help me achieve my goals. The advisor can look at my goal colleges and help choose courses that are suitable.
